Lukey came to us from a rural shelter in central Ohio.  His skin, mostly on his back, was completely raw from a severe flea infestation and his body’s allergic response to the fleas.  He has healed tremendously while in his foster home, but is still missing a great deal of hair.  We see signs of new growth, but there is no way to know if all or how much of it will come back.  The vet said it could take several months to see.   

Because of his extreme allergy to the fleas, it would not be uncommon for a dog like him to have other allergies, such as to food ingredients, grasses or pollen, that might manifest in the future.  He’s been pretty itchy, so our vet has put him on Apoquel and it’s been amazingly effective!  The cost of this prescription is about $86 per month.  It’s possible that another medication might also work, or a discounted price can be found for Apoquel, but that should be a consideration if hoping to adopt him.

Luke is a lover!  He loves everyone and wants to be your best friend.  He prefers to sleep next to his human or other canine family members.  He also loves squeaky toys and he’s very adept at de-squeaking them.  He loves chew toys.  He loves to go for car rides.  He loves to play!  Maybe a couple of  school-aged youngsters to play with would be fun for him.   We are pretty sure he would love another dog to play with, but it would have to be the right match. He seems to do best with dogs around his own size, but could be overwhelming to a senior who values his or her own personal space. 

This boy is perfectly housebroken.  He is crated when his foster mom is gone, and he is great about going into his crate, as long as getting a treat is involved.  He has the potential to do ok with free rein when home alone and not crated.   

Lukey is a really great dog who we’ve been fortunate to take in and provide the care he wasn’t receiving in his previous home.  He’s such a sweetheart and only wants two things: to love with all his heart and for someone to love him right back.  If you don’t mind that there’s a possibility that he might have some permanent hair loss and can handle the cost of his allergy med, he’s got a great big heart to more than make up for it.
